How to Compress a PDF

  1. Select or drop one PDF.
  2. Utiloot analyses it and shows the estimated size for Low, Medium and High compression.
  3. Pick a level and select Compress PDF.
  4. Select Download Compressed PDF. The file keeps your file name, with the level added.

Which Compression Level Should I Choose?

The size is reduced mainly by saving the pictures in the PDF at a lower quality and resolution, and by packing the file more tightly. Text stays as text. If a level cannot make your PDF smaller, you get the original back unchanged, never a larger file.

Is It Safe to Compress PDF Files Online?

Compression happens on Utiloot's server, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, held in memory only while it is compressed, and not saved to disk. The Privacy Policy explains how files are handled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

A PDF that is mostly text, or that was already compressed, has little left to remove. Compression saves the most on PDFs full of photos or scanned pages.

How large can the PDF be?

Up to 25 MB, one file at a time.

Can I reduce PDF file size for free?

Yes. Compress PDF is free, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
