Decimal (1000)

kB, MB, GB and TB are decimal units. Each one is 1,000 times the unit before it.

1 GB = 1,000 MB

Binary (1024)

KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB are binary units. Each one is 1,024 times the unit before it.

This is why a drive sold as “1 TB” shows up as about 931 GiB: the drive is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, and the operating system is counting in 1,024s.

Why does a 1 TB drive show as about 931 GB?

The manufacturer counts a terabyte as a trillion bytes. The operating system divides by 1024 three times, which gives roughly 931 of its units.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

A megabyte is a million bytes. A mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes, about five per cent more.

How many MB are in a GB?

A thousand in the decimal system, or 1024 MiB in a GiB if you are working in binary units.

Are bits and bytes the same thing?

No. There are eight bits in a byte, which is why a 100 Mbps connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB per second.
